I have been an embroiderer for many years and, having a keen interest in dolls houses, I began to embroider smaller and smaller items. Having gained a qualification in miniature embroidery, I now regularly teach the craft in day and residential classes, from my home.

I live in a lovely part of the country amidst the beautiful South Downs and feel privileged to be able to spend time doing what I like best – designing and embroidering in 1/12 scale for the dolls house.

Since my husband Peter’s early retirement, he has also become involved and is now a well known face at all the exhibitions and needlecraft fairs we attend around the country.

I also enjoy writing regularly for the Dolls House Magazine and to date have written two books on miniature embroidery for the dolls house - click here for details.

I regularly give talks to local dolls house clubs and Womens Institutes and hopefully encourage more people into the hobby.

The comment I hear most is “You must have very good eyesight.” I haven’t – it is probably about average for my age, but I do have good magnification and good light and these are essential to get pleasure from your embroidery. It is the holes in your fabric you need to be able to see and if you can’t, or it is a strain, then you probably won’t enjoy it.  So, check out what is on the market to help you see better and find something that suits you. I use magnifying glasses (supplied by my optician) but many of my students prefer either a floor standing magnifying glass with a light or a magnifying glass that hangs around their neck. There are also small magnifying glasses that attach to your own glasses.

So do have a go and create something for your dolls house that you will be proud to show others. If you have not tried miniature embroidery before, start with a chart marked with a * from our catalogue. These are for beginners and you should be pleased with the result but do please telephone me if you need any advice.  If you are a more experienced embroiderer you will find plenty to interest you in the catalogue. To order your copy please click here.
